Road safety in Gujarat

Gujarat is working aggressively for improving Road Safety and has been successful in reducing accidents since past few years. The state has undertaken several initiatives to address road safety,some of them are mentioned below.

 

 

27,249 number of road accidents were recorded in Gujarat in 2012, while the number of road accidents recorded in 2021 are 15,186 in Nos[1]. A considerable reduction of 44% is observed in number of road accidents from 2012 to 2021 within the state. The reduction in number of accidents can be considered significant as number of registered vehicles in Gujarat increased from 1,57,72,453 (157.72 Lakh) in 2012-13 to 2,77,32,787 in 2020-21 (277.32 Lakh), which corresponds to 43% of increase during the same time period[2].

 

The State has expanded infrastructure for issuance of learning license from 36 licensing centers to 221 ITI Centers and 29 Polytechnic Colleges. Faceless services that do not require any physical presence of applicant have been initiated for several services like Renewal & Duplicate License, Registration of new vehicles, NOC, Selected Numbers, Special & Temporary Permits, Hypothecation Termination, Duplicate Registration Certificates, etc.

 

Since 2010-11, Commissione rate of Transport (CoT), GoG is implementing a unique initiative related to Traffic Education and Awareness Mobile (TEAM) Van under which 21 TEAM Vans have covered 17,020 schools and 38,142 public places reaching out to 28,81,339 students and 5,574,583 citizens[3]. Total of 196 Road Safety Fairs were also organized to create awareness amongst people. Education and awareness campaigns were run through various measures such as newspapers, FM Radio and All India Radio. Marathon Runs and street plays were also organized to promote road safety. Medical Camps and eye check-up camps were arranged for drivers. Helmet distribution drives were also conducted in the state[4].
